Pros and Cons of Distance Learning Programs

Distance learning basics

Online education, or distance learning, is fast becoming more and more mainstream these days. It is also known by names such as learning online, online adult education, distance learning degrees, long distance education and other names, this way of learning allows individuals to get an educational degree or certificate with an accredited institution or school right from their living room or bedroom, using only a high speed internet connection.

With the rise of the internet, distance learning via mail has become a thing of the past, being replaced by the faster, more full and complete internet experience that everyone is so familiar with. It is actually a better learning experience as well.. With just a computer, internet access and some desire, you can earn a higher education degree without ever setting foot inside a classroom.

Distance Learning Education and it’s Benefits

The biggest advantage of distance learning education is the flexibility you have, especially if you are employed full time and have adult commitments, children or other various grown up responsibilities. You can attend class late at night once the children are asleep, or squeeze in some course work during your lunch break at work. Having the ability to work at your own pace is a huge benefit of distance learning, and one of the main reasons to look into going back for that degree you always wanted. Lower fees for online courses also makes many online colleges more affordable than brick and mortar colleges or universites, giving yet another benefit to going back to school. Lastly, the option to obtain a degree or a certificate, such as the paralegal certifications, is yet another benefit.

Don’t Fall Into These Traps

Unless you are highly self motivated, online education can be tougher than you think. Many people that are taking online classes complain that they miss the interaction of other students and the professor that can be found on a traditional university or college. Taking a distance learning course requires students to be able to manage their time properly, stay on task and meet your deadlines. Staying on task can be difficult for some, but it is very important simply because you do not have the instructor there to motivate you or hold you accountable.

Synchronous vs. Asynchronous Learning

When we discuss distance learning colleges, there are two basic types of courses offered. These are grouped into two groups, synchronous and asynchronous distance learning institutions. Synchronous learning is a bit more structured. You have class times, and you must attend those classes like you would a traditional school. The only difference is that you are attending class online, not in a physical classroom.? Primary communication is in real time, through web cam and instant messaging. Asynchronous learning, however, does not require you to attend class at set times, and gives you the freedom to view lectures or classes at any time. Your communication is not in real time, but rather via email or discussion boards. In these asynchronous courses, you truly work at your own pace.

Making a Choice

There are numerous distance learning colleges and schools that offer many choices to help you obtain your degree online. Once you have decided on what certificate or degree you want, you should choose an online school that fits your style of learning well and has a solid reputation among the employers you are targeting once you graduate. You will also need to pick an online institution that is accredited so your degree is viewed in a good light by any potential employers as well as other colleges and universities should you want to go to another college.

With a good head on your shoulders, and a college level degree, you can tidy up your resume and land the job you desire in the field of your choice. Whether you are looking to finish your masters, bachelors or doctorate degree, getting that educational degree can only improve your chances at success.
